A GPS track of a flight from launch on runway 12: searching for thermals, and then rising in a thermal of about 4 - 5m/s all the way upto 8000', before tracking north to the 'Tropic of Capricorn monument' on the Stuart Highway and returning to the circuit to land. The colours represent Vertical Speed (as logged by GPS). Red being fastest up, and dark blue being fastest down. Circling in the thermal can be clearly seen, and the dark blue at the top of the flight is an attempt to loose altitude (while still in rising air!) by the pilot after reaching our clearance height for the day. Another view of the thermal Plan view of the thermal. You can see the maximum vertical speed is achieved at the western side of the pilots circles. This indicates the pilot could have centered slightly better on the thermal. GPS Track overlay on a map of the area.
